bio
Corey Garcia was given the traditional name, Yayuweh, of the Sun and Red Corn Clans from the Pueblo of Acoma. His mother's family, come from a long line of artisans and potters, while his father's family were masons with US military backgrounds. Both sides of his family are active in the traditional/public affairs of the pueblo community.
Corey's mother encouraged him to draw and paint from an early age, and well into high school. Years later, he entered the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) where he majored in 2-dimentional design (AFA, 2005) and museum studies.
In 2005, Corey had the wonderful opportunity to intern at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MMA) in New York City, working in the Education Department and the Costume Institute. While an intern, he had the good fortune to have mentors, Lloyd Oxendine and Gail and Murray Bruce.
Currently, Corey is an on-going student who works and lives in the City Different. His current venture into clothing and retro style aprons with friend, Seth Browder, is a small growing business with repeat clients from across the US. House of Sandol began in 2011 and has grown rapidly to include handmade blankets, various kitchen items, men's ties and handkerchiefs with plans to add much more in the coming year.
Corey's list of collectors continues to grow and his knowledge and training in the museum field and gallery operations is ongoing.
